CHRIST ALMIGHTY! another week gone, weathers been good to me and this weekend saw some beachy time some drinky time and some people- getting- shoes- stolen- in- the- park time! i was not affected by this, but still....shoes?!
i mentioned the HIV/AIDs workshop a few of us were suppose to go to, well we went along thinking 'marvelous after this workshop i shall be clued up on all the basic facts on this tragic disease, i shall have knowledge that mere mortals could never dream of having on the subject, unbias, reliable and FACTUAL!' Unfortunately this was not to be, it wasn't until we got to the baptist church in which the 3 day workshop was to take place, that we realised the whole thing was a christian based workshop funded by PEPFAR (american christian organisation donors or somethang of the sort) an organisation that have been highly criticised by many people in the field who disagree with their perspective and their insitance on promoting ABSTINANCE like mad men! it was englightening but for alllllll the wrong reasons. everyone who attended was part of the local evangelical church and they referred to jesus and god whenever possible. they came out with some right crappity crap i tell you, the guy that ran it was a nice guy but the way they spoke about sinning, sexual promiscuity and the idea of those who are 'innocent' contracting the disease was miiiiind boggling. it was interesting to see one of the ways the message and awareness is being spread but it just seems like they've got the wrong end of the stick and they left alot of questions unanswered.
i think they realised that the three of us weren't religious as every time we would voice our opinion it would be pretty much the opposite to what everyone else was saying, there were some weird unreliable statistics about condoms and a hilarious poem which i would like to try and find! also, and i feel pretty bad about this, everytime they would pray before the worshop and at the end i would end up bowing my head, but then they would make orgasmic noises almost like 'mmmmmm' 'thankyou jesus' 'mmmm yes jesus...' so needless to say i had to eat my sweater sleeve as i was laughing so hard inside (i think they may have cottoned onto this) i know it's rude so forgive me!
although the workshop was a great big load of balls, we met some really lovely people there who wanted to swap contact details with us and invite us round for dinner and the church pastor took us out the other night with his 21 year old daughter and her friend to the local casino where he left us to have some drinks and what not, so he obviously wasn't the strictist fellow in the world. he did wear his 'i heart jesus' hat out though, he had it on backwards at one stage, bless.
i still think i would like to do a more factual workshop in a similar vein, without the religious bits though. it felt more like a value and ethics based exercise than anything else, weird shit, but an experience to say the least! three days but still they did not manage to harvest my soul (this is a term used by the actual pastor, it sounds like a sinister cult ritual!)
anyway my plans keeps changing not sure about garden route any more, might go further up the country for two weeks as oppose to one, dunno at the momento my mind has gone to mush right now.
also i have now changed TWO proper nappies, they smelt great!!!
